Changing the air filter on a '99 Mistubishi Galant?

I removed the old, dirty air filter, but forgot to note which direction it was installed. It is a rectangular-shaped air filter, with a gasket around the perimeter.

The gasket is closer to one side of the filter than the other.

When installing the new filter, which side of it faces down?

(i.e., the side closer to the edge gasket, or the side

farther from the seal?)

Thank you!|||If there%26#039;s a metal webbing on one side over the top of the paper element, that%26#039;s the side that goes toward the engine. The reason is that you don%26#039;t want anything to get sucked into the engine including the air filter element itself if it were to get old and start decomposing. The bigger folded paper pleats side should point toward the incoming air stream to be filtered.
