How do i change the air filter on my central air unit that is outside?

it's an older model mobile home and i believe there has to be a filter that has to be changed somewhere but have no idea where to begin

The outdoor unit doesn't have an air filter. Look inside. There should be a panel inside that has the indoor unit behind it. It may be located somewhere near the water heater. You do not need to call a repairman to change the filter.

call a plumber that specialises in cooling and heating.
The filter would not be on the heat exchanger outside. It would be located at the air intake to the furnace. Follow the cold air return to the point where it joins the furnace, your filter should be inserted into the ductwork at that point.
You should call an a/c guy who can also clean the outside unit. Get references for an a/c guy from your friends or neighbors. He/she should be able to find the filter.
I have one built in 84 with the compressor outside, but inside is the %26quot;return%26quot; and that's what gets a filter. In my case it's 24 x 24 square.

Certainly I'm not assuming you haven't checked, but I'd be surprised to know there's a filter outdoors, unless it's a window unit AC
You have to change it from the outside, unless it is inside.
There is no filter on the outside part of air-conditioners. The air filters are inside and filter the air as it recirculates within the mobile home. If it is a roof mount unit like on a motor home, remove the cover/grill on the ceiling and the filter will be exposed. If it is not a roof mount the filter will be somewhere in the return air duct usually close to the recirculating fan, possibly behind a louver on the wall or inside the fan unit itself.

Good Luck!
the air filter is inside in the large return (big vent on ceiling) open it up and you will see it just remove it and stick the new one in easy to do.
There is no filter on the outside condenser unit, but it does need cleaning occasionally. You can obtain a coil cleaner at some (NOT ALL) hardwares. It comes in a spray bottle with all the directions you need. This is one of the most common a/c problems and you can handle it yourself.
There is not 1 correct answer to your problem thus far. Look around inside your mobile home and find the return air duct opening, could have more than one but not likely. That would probably be the largest grill in the system. You might find the filter behind this grill,if not follow the the return air duct all the way back to the furnace, the filter will be somewhere in this duct. Most likely places to find filter would be behind before mentioned grill, in furnace or in duct line. Yes, filter can be outside if you have a package unit ( A/C and furnace in same cabinet).
