When to change air filter 2003 Corolla LE?

I just had an oil change and they tried to sell me air filters - one for the cabin air - another for the engine's air filter. (for about $60) So I went online to see what they cost (about $50) but when I read about the engine air filter replacement it claimed that the replacement was good for a million miles...while the oil change guy said that ...%26quot;as soon as it gets gray at all, it needs changing%26quot;.. I don't get it... if a replacement is worth a million miles then why wouldn't the original be good for at least 1/2 a million miles - bottom line, should I change it at 75,000 miles? By the way the engine air filter replacement is $40 and the cabin air filter is $10... I can see paying the $10 for clean air but I just can't figure out why I just can't drive with the filter that should logically have at least another 400,000+ miles on it, if the parts dealer claim is even close.

Do not go by the claims of a parts dealer. They aren't bad people, they just don't know every person's habits in the world.

If you go to any high dust and debris area, than the filter's life will be shorter. Any thing other than perfect conditions shortens the life of any filter.

As far as the filter starting to show any gray, it doesn't mean that it is done for. But after 75,000 miles, how much more are you looking for?

$40 for another 75-100,000 miles is cheap! The cabin filter can usuallt be blown out and used again, if you want.

the original is NOT a million mile filter...change it every 25,000 mi....the million mile has to be washed every 10,000/20,000.......are u really gona do that....i dont think so...
They were just trying to sell you something you did not need.

You can replace your own filters yourself just buy a manual and a basic hand tool set.

Also you replace your air filter sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
There's no way air filters can last a million miles, that's bull****

All oil, fuel and air filters should be replaced every 15000Km/9321 miles, and a cam belt every 75000km/46605 miles.
It is more expensive to have them change it, but the convenience is worth it.
Shouldn't you trust Toyota and your dealer to tell you when the air filters should be replaced? Remember, a quickie lube may be just trying to sell you stuff to make money. Your Toyota dealer has to go by Toyota's recommended replacement intervals. Check your car's owner's manual and call the dealer.
