Changing an air filter on a 2001 BMW 530?

Is this something that an average joe can do? It sounds easy but when I looked under the hood it looks to be buried under there. I'm not very mechanically inclined so bare with me! Thanks

If you look for a plastic tube that has a opening toward the grill where the air comes in. It will come back toward the engine and a box sometimes with four screws sometimes latch's its in there and yes you can change it yourself. If you take it to an automotive parts supplier such as auto zone they will show you and sometimes put it it for you free.

A below average Joe can change an air filter.
All you have to do is find the stock air box. There are usually clips holding it together. You pull out the old air filter after unclipping it and slip in the new one.
