If the AIR FILTER in my car is installed incorrectly, could it cause engine damage?

I'm trying to change my air filter in my car and it's a tight fit. If it's not positioned exactly correct, could it do damage to the engine?

If the air filter is not installed properly and making an airtight seal you could destroy your engine. The particles in the air will be ingested into the engine and will at best cause excessive wear to the moving parts inside and damage the fuel delivery system and at worst cause a catastrophic failure of the engine by contaminating the oil and causing bearing failure. Make sure it's installed correctly and replaced regularly.

Well... you could damage the engine if you drive without a filter/incorrectly installed filter for a long time. But if its for a month or less, nah. You're fine.
naw, all it does is filter the air. You could drive without one at all, you would just have some loss of power and fuel economy.
No,are you sure it's the right filter? Thats probably what it is,but it should be fitted corectly cause over time you will be suckig dust and dirt and what not into your intake and eventually over time then yeah, and the person that said,%26quot;you can run it without one%26quot; well you can and that will destroy it faster, take the filter into Wal Mart,or your auto store in after you park and be sure its the right one by matching them up.The old one that is the one that was in it before.
