Should I change my air filter?

I have a 1992 toyota paseo, and I change the air filter about 3-4 years ago, also, I in that time, I have driven about 18,000 to 24,000 miles, since I do not drive much here in california. Is it time to change the filter? Why is it the filter is only dirty at the bottom(black-ish alittle), but not the top? My miles per gallon have gone down just a little too.
Should I change my air filter?
The air comes in at the bottom, that is why it is dirtier there. You should definately change your filter after 3 years! Intervals depend on conditions, dirt roads or driving in dusty conditions requrie shorter intervals. Urban California freeway driving doesn't help much either (the dirt could be soot, tire rubber and oil) I would do it yearly in those conditions. I have a fleet of heavy trucks that have a guage on them, looks like the auto industry would do that too. Drive safe!!! Zane
Should I change my air filter?
if you have to ask, you already know the answer ;)
Not sure why it would be black at the bottom and not all around hmmm.. anyways you should get a K%26amp;N air filter. They will last a lifetime and they are reusable just rinse them out and its ready for another go.
yeah it's best to change it cause your losing air flow and not getting clean air to the motor and the k$n is the best more airflow and it is reusable you just have to by the recharge kit rinse oil it back up and put it back in.
Never hurts, especially after that long. Not too mention an air filter is like $5-10 depending on where you get.

It is probably most dirty on the intake side, where most of the crap will get filtered, the black stuff is what has been filtered.

If you can do it by yourself, go out and get one tonight. Should only take 10 minutes.
