Why does my 92 chevy S10 have oil in the air filter, Would changing the PCV valve fix this?

A very small amount of oil in the air filter is normal. An excessive amount would be caused by a faulty pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. Take out the pcv valve and shake it. If it rattles, its ok. If not, change it.

Change it anyway. They're not expensive, and if it's still as bad, than it's something else.

I had the same year S10, but I don't recall it ever having that problem.

The above answers are correct but also take into consideration the age of the vehicle. Well-worn engines have %26quot;blow by,%26quot; which is compression gases slipping past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This excess pressure in the block can cause a PVC valve to fail.
Some oil inside the air cleaner assembly is fairly normal as the air from the crankcase is circulated out. Be sure the PCV valve is good or just change it to the right type to be sure. Also check the vacuum hoses to the valve and the inlet breather hose and filter as these can be collapsed or plugged which can cause the same type of a problem. A poorly running or worn out motor can also cause a lot of oil to end up upstairs as well. Good luck.
I encountered a similar problem on another engine. After all the alternatives were fixed and still oil was getting into the air cleaner, I removed the rocker arm cover and found the deflector plate had come off and was laying on top of the head. The plate is there to keep the rocker arms from throwing oil directly into the PCV valve.
