Can changing air purifer filters to better replacements = higher CADR?

I have a couple of air purifiers. I have read many reviews on how they work. My question is what exactly makes one model have a greater CADR than another? Could you possibly put a better filter in one %26amp; get better results? I'm sure its not that easy or someone would of thought of it by now. It just seem like all they do is suck in air (through filters) then blow it back out.
