Why is my check engine light on AFTER I changed the air filter?

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer that runs rougher than crap until its warm. I changed the air filter in it and the check engine light came on and it wont go off. Why is that?

Maybe you disturbed an air duct sensor while changing the filter or maybe it's a coincidence, but either way you need to get the OBD-II computer error code read out that tells the technician what diagnostic procedure to follow to determine why the check engine light is on. Then have the code reset and see if the check engine light comes back on again with the same error codes.

HAVE AN AUTOZONE CHECK IT FOR YOU. CHECK WHAT THE CODE IS THAT IS CAUSING YOUR LIGHT TO GO ON.
The old filter must have been plugged up pretty good, so now with the new one its getting richer oxygen whihc the engine doesn't know what to do with.. the ECU should reset its automatically, but if it doesn't.. take the positive line off the battery for atleast 10 seconds and reconnect it. the light should go off. if not.. sorry bud.
Until you have the code read, NO ONE can tell you ANYTHING about why the check engine light is on. There are hundreds of codes and MOST have absolutely NOTHING to do with the air filter. Take the car to ANY auto parts store and they can read the code. This will not necessarily tell you how to fix the problem, but it will tell you what caused the computer to turn the light on.
